IPv4 vs IPv6 Proxy: What Is the Difference?
Updated:
An IPv4 proxy exits to the internet from a classic IPv4 address and works with virtually every website. An IPv6 proxy exits from an IPv6 address, which is far cheaper per IP but only works on sites that support IPv6. Choose IPv4 when compatibility matters most; choose IPv6 when your target platforms support it and you need many IPs on a budget.
IPv4 and IPv6 in one minute
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.25. There are only about 4.3 billion of them, they ran out years ago, and providers now buy or lease them on a secondary market. That scarcity is why an IPv4 proxy costs more.
IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:7334. The address space is so large that a provider can assign huge blocks of addresses at low cost. IPv6 is the newer standard, but many websites and networks still run on IPv4 only.
IPv4 vs IPv6 proxy: side-by-side comparison
The practical difference is not speed or security. It is which websites you can reach and how platforms judge the IP.
| IPv4 proxy | IPv6 proxy | |
|---|---|---|
| Website compatibility | Works with almost every website and app | Only sites and apps that support IPv6 |
| Cost per IP | Higher, IPv4 is scarce | Much lower, addresses are plentiful |
| How platforms track it | Mostly by individual IP | Often by address block (subnet), not only the single IP |
| Best for | Account logins, ads, marketplaces, any site | Bulk tasks on IPv6-ready platforms |
| Main risk | Higher cost when you need many IPs | Connection fails on IPv4-only sites |
Which websites support IPv6?
Many large platforms, such as Google, YouTube and Facebook, accept IPv6 connections. Plenty of smaller websites, regional marketplaces, payment pages, game servers and internal APIs still do not. Support can also differ between a platform's main domain and the subdomains it uses for login, images or checkout.
Before buying IPv6 proxies in bulk, check that every domain in your workflow has an IPv6 address. You can look up the AAAA record from a terminal:
nslookup -type=AAAA example.comon Windows, macOS or Linux.dig AAAA example.com +shorton macOS or Linux.- If the command returns no IPv6 address, that domain cannot be reached through an IPv6-only exit.
Why subnets matter more with IPv6
With IPv4, one IP usually equals one identity in the eyes of a platform. With IPv6, a single home connection often receives a whole block of addresses, so many platforms group IPv6 traffic by the block, commonly a /64 prefix, rather than by the individual address.
In practice this means that hundreds of IPv6 addresses from the same block may be treated as one source. If you need clear separation between accounts on one platform, ask how the addresses are allocated, spread accounts across different blocks, or use dedicated IPv4 for those accounts.
When to choose an IPv4 proxy
- You log in to accounts that matter, such as ad accounts, seller accounts or social profiles. See Facebook Ads and Shopee and Amazon.
- Your workflow touches sites you have not verified for IPv6 support.
- You need a specific country and a dedicated IP used by one customer only.
- You want the setup to just work in any browser, antidetect browser or tool.
When an IPv6 proxy makes sense
- Your target platforms are confirmed to support IPv6 on every domain you use.
- You need a large number of IPs and cost per IP is the deciding factor.
- The task is high-volume and tolerant of an occasional block, such as checking public pages.
- You have tested a small batch first and confirmed it behaves as expected on your platform.
Speed, security and setup
Speed depends on the provider's network and the distance to the target server, not on the IP version itself. Security is also the same: both carry HTTPS traffic encrypted end to end between your browser and the website.
Setup is identical in most tools. You usually connect to the proxy's entry address and port with a username and password, and the proxy chooses the exit IP. Choose HTTP as the proxy type, the same as for IPv4. Our Proxifier guide and antidetect browser guides cover the exact fields.
What Vinaproxy.com offers
Vinaproxy.com sells private IPv4 proxies, dedicated datacenter IPs with one customer per IP, in the United States, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, plus static ISP proxies in the United States and Vietnam. For volume work on IPv6-ready platforms we also offer IPv6 proxies.
All plans include unlimited bandwidth and a static IP for the whole rental period. If you are unsure, start with a few IPv4 IPs for account work and test IPv6 separately on the platforms that support it.
Frequently asked questions
Is an IPv6 proxy faster than IPv4?
Not inherently. Speed depends on the provider's network and the location of the server, not on the address format.
Can an IPv6 proxy open IPv4-only websites?
Not through an IPv6 exit. If the website has no IPv6 address, the connection fails. Check the domain's AAAA record or test it first.
Does Facebook work with IPv6 proxies?
Facebook accepts IPv6 connections, but platforms may group IPv6 addresses by subnet. For valuable ad or business accounts, dedicated IPv4 gives clearer separation.
Why are IPv6 proxies so much cheaper?
IPv6 addresses are abundant, while IPv4 addresses are scarce and have to be bought or leased. The lower cost reflects supply, not a lower-quality connection.
How do I know whether my proxy is IPv4 or IPv6?
Open My IP through the proxy or run the proxy checker. An address with colons is IPv6; four numbers separated by dots is IPv4.
Pick the IP version that fits your work
Dedicated IPv4 in seven countries, static ISP in the US and Vietnam, and IPv6 for volume tasks. Activation is automatic.
