How to set up a proxy in Chrome and Firefox
Updated:
To set up a proxy in Chrome, you change your computer's proxy settings, because Chrome has no proxy box of its own. Firefox is different: open its Network Settings, choose manual configuration and enter the Vinaproxy.com host and port there. Both browsers then ask once for the proxy username and password.
Chrome and Firefox handle proxies differently
This difference decides which browser to use. If you only want one browser on a proxy while the rest of your computer stays on your normal connection, Firefox is the easier option.
| Question | Chrome | Firefox |
|---|---|---|
| Where the proxy is set | Windows or macOS system settings | Inside Firefox, Network Settings |
| What else is affected | Other apps that follow the system proxy | Only Firefox |
| Username and password | Asked in a sign-in pop-up | Asked in a pop-up, can be saved |
| Different proxy per profile | No, all profiles share it | Yes, each Firefox profile has its own |
Chrome proxy setup on Windows and macOS
In Chrome, open Settings, then System, and click the link to open your computer's proxy settings. The page you land on belongs to the operating system, and labels vary between Windows and macOS versions.
- Windows: under Network & internet and Proxy, turn on manual proxy setup, enter
203.0.113.10as the address and8080as the port, then save. - macOS: in Network, open the details of your active connection, go to Proxies, enable both the web proxy (HTTP) and secure web proxy (HTTPS) with the same host and port.
- Windows has no password field here; Chrome shows a sign-in box for
user123andpass456when you load the first page. - Remember that apps which follow the system proxy will now use it too.
Firefox proxy setup in Network Settings
In Firefox, open Settings, stay on the General page, scroll down to Network Settings and click Settings. Pick Manual proxy configuration, enter 203.0.113.10 in the HTTP proxy box and 8080 as the port, and tick the option to also use this proxy for HTTPS. Leave the SOCKS fields empty.
When the first page loads, Firefox asks for the proxy username and password. You can let it remember them, so the prompt does not return every time you start the browser.
Running several identities in one browser
Chrome profiles all share one system proxy, so they cannot each have their own IP. Firefox profiles can: create extra ones through the about:profiles page and give each a different Vinaproxy.com proxy, for example one on a United Kingdom proxy and one on a Hong Kong proxy.
That is fine for a handful of identities. For many accounts, an antidetect browser (see our GenLogin guide) separates fingerprints as well as IPs.
Browser proxy troubleshooting
- Sign-in pop-up keeps returning: the username or password is wrong, or was typed with a space. In Chrome, close every window to clear the cached attempt and try again.
- Pages fail with a proxy connection error: check host and port in the system settings or in Firefox, and make sure the order is still active in Orders.
- IP check shows the wrong country or your own IP: in Firefox, confirm manual configuration is selected, not system settings. Then compare with the proxy checker.
- No internet after removing the proxy: the system proxy is still on. Turn off manual proxy setup in Windows or macOS.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't I find proxy settings inside Chrome?
Chrome uses the operating system's proxy. Its settings page only links to the Windows or macOS proxy screen, which is where you enter the host and port.
Can I use a proxy in Chrome without affecting other programs?
Not with the built-in settings, since they apply system wide. Use Firefox, which has its own proxy settings, or a tool like Proxifier to choose which programs use the proxy.
Does Firefox save the proxy password?
It can. When the sign-in prompt appears, allow Firefox to remember the credentials so it fills them in next time.
Which option do I tick in Firefox for HTTPS websites?
Tick the option to also use the HTTP proxy for HTTPS. Vinaproxy.com proxies carry HTTPS traffic through the HTTP proxy; SOCKS is not supported.
How do I turn the proxy off again?
In Firefox, switch Network Settings back to no proxy or system settings. For Chrome, turn off manual proxy setup in the Windows or macOS network settings.
